This is going to be a series of articles from my own point of view, these are my own thought, so please don't hold the program liable form my insanity. I hope you find it interesting but I mostly hope that you get a clear understanding of what we as coaches go through and the rollacoaster ride that is coaching youth football in Baltimore City.
Since I'm going to be sharing my thoughts I wanted to give yall a little background on me, everyone here has been really cool, and accepting me into the fold but this is the short version of how I got here.
So, my first-year coaching, let’s just say it didn’t go the way I planned. The program I was in was new and so were all our coaches, so I had to find my own answers because we didn’t have that guy that had been coaching for 30 years and had seen it all before. I realized that if I was going to be any good at this I needed to work on my craft. I started reading books, going to clinics, taking e-courses, and chalk talking on the phone with my friends that had coaching experience.
Every week he would ask “So, when you coming over here?" It got to the point where my wife started asking me when we were going
By the time the Hawks joined Baltimore Metro League, I was the Director of Football, so I was in contact with representatives from all the teams in the league. I guess that’s how me and D got cool. He also was a guy that had been coaching forever, and even though our organizations played each other he was always forthcoming and open with me if I asked him something.
What people don’t know is, we have been talking about this move for years, and I've been around just not on the sideline. I was in the stands at M&T when the 14U won State, and even when both organizations were in different leagues, D and I still talked probably once a week, and every week he would ask “So, when you coming over here? It got to the point where my wife started asking me when we were going. Truthfully, I never thought I would be wearing orange & black. Moving from organization to organization isn’t my thing, but after seven years here I am in a new place. In the end it my decision came down to which organization I felt was a better fit for who I am, and how I want to coach football.
