Diary of a Youth Football Coach: August 31th

This is going to be a series of articles from my own point of view, these are my own thought, so please don't hold the program liable form my insanity. I hope you find it interesting but I mostly hope that you get a clear understanding of what we as coaches go through and the rollacoaster ride that is coaching youth football in Baltimore City.

Dear Diary,

It’s that time of the year again, you know the whole song and dance for ID cards. We been asking for MVA IDs’ since we were out here for conditioning camp.

The reason why this part is stressful is because as coaches there’s not a lot we can do. So the league didn’t certify our rosters because all our players don’t have their ID cards.

The crazy part is that our game got cancelled for this week, and parents are probably blaming us.

Parents, guardians, caretakers, as a coach I don’t ask for a whole lot. I need registration fees and IDs’ and for the most part If you handle those two things, we will pretty much take it from there. A Maryland Identification Card lasts for five years, costs under $20, and in my opinion makes youth sports safer.

All of us, parents and coaches have seen some children that we are like nah, there is no way that kid is the right age. I remember playing a team with a damn near 6 foot tall nine year old, I was like um coach you sure that's the kid and not the dad, but he pulled out the MVA identification and that ended that.

.

That ID takes away the question marks, and I have seen sidelines damn near riot, because somebody says that kids too old, or he goes to school with my cousin and their are in 8th grade, and everybody is mad but most times nobody has any proof.

My son’s team has a player that is way bigger than most kids his age, and unless you checked his ID you would never believe that he is only 9 years old. His coach was so excited when he got his Maryland Identification card, he already knew that people would question the child’s age because of his size.
