This is going to be a series of articles from my own point of view, these are my own thought, so please don't hold the program liable form my insanity. I hope you find it interesting but I mostly hope that you get a clear understanding of what we as coaches go through and the rollacoaster ride that is coaching youth football in Baltimore City.
Dear Diary,
Since we are getting ready to get the season started, I feel that the following comment is acceptable. I love it when parents (fans) are passionate about their children’s’ success, I whole heartedly support you clapping, screaming, cheering, dancing, beat boxing, and summersaulting if it feels good to you . (I’m lying about the summersaults, some of yall be doing way too much)
Seriously though, as we are pumping our kids up, we need to be mindful we are not tearing other kids down. Please believe me, I’m not one of those extra sensitive save the whales types (although I have nothing against whales) I’m all about competition but we have to remember even at the oldest age groups they are still children , and we as adults shouldn’t have anything negative to say to a child.
I was at a scrimmage this weekend, and the children were doing their thing but the adults, LORD save us all. The crowd was just... a little too pumped for the occasion, like it's a scrimmage not the superbowl.
As we are pumping our kids up, we need to be careful we are not tearing other kids down
Anyway it reminded me of the time I copped this fresh leather coat, some of yall might remember the Averix leathers back in like 2000, but it was mid-October and it was'nt quite cold enough for all that yet, but I rocked it anyway. All night long people kept saying "that jacket tight, aint you hot though?" After like the 15th person asked me, and I was tired of wiping my sweat of with bar napkins, I ended up taking the jacket off before I passed out from heat exhaustion. Maybe the parents will do a similar number and realize there will be a time to go hard but doing it too early just makes you look crazy.
Like I said be proud of your baby, cheer, high five, wear tee-shirts with your sons’ number on it,REP YOUR SQUAD, but please stop being the highlight of the game. Youth sports should never be about the adults,
